R-2026-074 authorizing an application and acceptance, if awarded, a grant from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Administration, Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Administration, Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, has grant funds available to local governments to support efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety; and, WHEREAS, the Yakima Police Department has been notified that $62,084 in grant funds have been allocated to the City of Yakima and Yakima County and are available upon submission of a completed grant application and satisfaction of certain conditions; and, WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Yakima considered this matter at an open public meeting in which citizens were provided an opportunity to comment and deems it to be in the best interest of the City to authorize submission of an application to the Justice Assistance Grant Program for said available funds and execution of all necessary documents and contracts to complete said grant transaction; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: 1, The City Manager or her designee is hereby authorized to submit a completed grant application to the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Administration, Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, to obtain a grant to fund local efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety. 2. The City Manager or her designee is further authorized to accept the grant on behalf of the City of Yakima, and to take all steps and execute all documents and contracts necessary to complete this grant transaction, including but not limited to execution of the attached interlocal agreement with Yakima County whereby Yakima County shall receive a portion of the grant proceeds for local law enforcement efforts, ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL this 19th day of May, 2026, ATTEST: alinda barra, CMC, City C ITEM TITLE: SUBMITTED BY: SUMMARY EXPLANATION: BUSINESS OF THE CITY COUNCIL YAKIMA, WASHINGTON AGENDA STATEMENT Item No. 7.E. For Meeting of: May 19, 2026 Resolution authorizing the application and acceptance, if awarded, grant from the United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Administration, Edward Byrne Memorial JAG Grant for FY2025 *Ira Cavin, Police Lieutenant This Resolution authorizes the Yakima Police Department to submit an application for federal grant funding awarded under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Local Grant (JAG) for fiscal year 2025. The Resolution further authorizes the City Manager to accept the grant if awarded. The funds would support overtime for Police patrols in high crime and high -profile community events.
