ITEM BUDGETED: N/A STRATEGIC PRIORITY 24-25: A Safe and Healthy Yakima RECOMMENDATION: ATTACHMENTS: Public Safety Update - Fire Department.docx 87 2026 First Quarter Public Safety Update — Fire Department SIGNIFICANT FIRE EVENTS: • Late January 6th to early January 7th: Mutual Aid to Union Gap (East Valley Fire Rescue covers Union Gap now) for multiple structure fires. Yakima Fire sent Truck 93, Engine 94, and Battalion 91 to assist with a warehouse fire, convenience store fire and two other small fires that occurred nearly simultaneously. • January 13th: Structure fire that started in the garage in the 7300 block of Englewood Hills Place. This is Station 92's first due area. A quick knock down prevented significant extension of the fire into the living area from the attached garage. • January 19th: Significant structure fire in a restaurant in the 1000 block of N 1st St. Crews battled the fire defensively through the night assisted by mutual aid crews from East Valley, Training Center, Selah, Gleed, and West Valley. The building was a total loss. • January 22nd: Fatality fire in the 500 block of W "I" St claimed the life of one of the occupants. Crews arrived on scene to find significant fire involvement in the area of the house that the victim was found in. EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATS (2,483 TOTAL CALLS): • 1780 Medical calls • 399 Service Calls (e.g.: lift assists and law enforcement support) • 164 No emergency calls (e.g.: false alarm, good intent and cancelled calls) • 95 Fire calls • 41 Hazardous Situation calls • 4 Rescue calls CALL SUBTYPE SAMPLES: • 21 Structure Fires. 7 were limited to the room and contents of origin. 14 were beyond the room and contents of origin. • 10 cooking fires • 162 Chest Pain EMS calls • 131 Overdose EMS calls • 98 Seizure EMS calls • 30 Cardiac Arrest EMS calls • 3 Gun-Shot Victim EMS calls • 295 Lift assists (7 of which were in independent/assisted living facilities) EMPLOYEE DEPARTURES: 88 • FF Richards, a firefighter with seven years of experience, accepted a lateral firefighter position in January. • FF March, a firefighter with 2 years of experience with Yakima Fire, accepted an entry level firefighter position and resigned at the end of February. • Lieutenant Golie, who was promoted to lieutenant early in 2025, accepted a lateral firefighter position in March.
