For Meeting of: January 6, 2026 ITEM TITLE: Martin Luther King Jr. Day proclamation SUBMITTED BY: Victoria Baker, City Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: At the December 9th Council meeting, there was a motion to place a Martin Luther King Jr. Day proclamation on an agenda in January. The motion passed unanimously. Attached for Council consideration is the proclamation. If approved, the proclamation will be read and presented to Rev. Trimble and Anthony Peterson. ITEM BUDGETED: N/A STRATEGIC PRIORITY 24-25: RECOMMENDATION: ATTACHMENTS: 2026 MLK Proclamation 2.docx 6 CI YOFYJ4 2IMJ4 PROCLA WA TIO .Ar woEREAs, Dr. Martin Luther ping, Jr. devoted his fife to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all, and challenged air Americans to participate in the never-ending workof building a more perfect union; and WOEAS, Dr. King's teachings can continue to guide and inspire us in addressing challenges in our communities, and the King.7foli ay and Service Act, enacted in 1994, designated the ping.7-foli lay as a national day of a volunteer service; and WIPEUAS, since 1994, millions of Americans have been inspired 6y the life and workof Dr. Martin Luther ping, Jr. to serve their neighbors and communities on the ping.7folulay, and serving on the ping.7folufay is an appropriate way to honor Dr ping, meet local and national needs, bring our citizens together and strengthen our communities and nation; and Zl%IIEI EAS, the ping Day of Service is the only federal holiday commemorated as a National Day of Service, and offers an opportunity for Americans to give back to their communities on the holiday and make an ongoing commitment to service throughout the year, and ZIIEWAS, ping Day of Service projects are being organized 6y a wide range of nonprofits and community organizations, educational institutions,public agencies, private businesses, and other organizations across the nation and WJLEKEAS, each of us can and must contribute to making our communities better with increased opportunity for all citizens and citizens of Yakima, Washington to have the opportunity to participate in events throughout our City on the ping Day of Service, January 19th, 2026, NOWTHEgaTO E, the Yakima City Council does hereby proclaim the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a DAYOfS 1iICcE and call upon the people of Yakima to pay tribute to the life and work,of Dr. Martin Luther ping, Jr. through participation in community service projects on Martin Luther King Day and throughout the year, 'Reinvesting in Our Community".
