When the FLOCK cameras were installed, the public was told that they are license plate readers that help find stolen cars. That they would be used during amber alerts, or help catch killers or other serious criminals. We knew that the data from these cameras gives law enforcement the ability to track our every movement like where we live, where we work, where our kids go to school, even where our favorite coffee shop is. Our city leaders ensured us that they would not be detecting facial recognition, people, gender, or race. That this data would only be used for law enforcement reasons, and would never be used for immigration enforcement, harassment, or for personal use. In October we learned that Immigration agencies had accessed FLOCK cameras. Early November, we found out that these cameras do in fact capture facial recognition data, a person driving a car, and can identify a vehicle simply by the dents, scratches, or stickers on the vehicle. A judge subsequently ruled that the information gathered by FLOCK cameras is so broad that it is Public Record, and ANYONE can access this data for any reason! That means that any stalker, murderer, or other person with bad intentions can have access. This is clearly against the policy of the City of Yakima and the Yakima Police Department. The Yakima police department has no way to protect the public from the misuse or abuse of this information. Keeping these camera systems active, presents a clear and present danger to the community. The cameras must be turned off. Sign this petition saying, "Turn off the FLOCK cameras until you can safeguard our community".
