Distributed at Meeting: tem# 2 It's time to stop funding the trolleys. Funding a nonprofit, may be admirable when we have funds to spare. But we should be careful choosing which nonprofits deserve taxpayer money. City is in a huge budget hole. We can't spend millions of dollars to rebuild broken tracks, more millions to build and energize new electric poles, and more millions to rebuild a bridge that could include bike and ped access but deliberately excludes multi -modal access. How do Yakima taxpayers benefit from this? The trolley functions as an occasional tourist excursion. It is not ADA accessible. Many more Yakima residents use the Harmon Center and Franklin Pool. Both of these enhance community health and well-being. The trolleys are not, as advertised "America's last intact, early 20th Century, interurban electric railroad!" The Yakima Valley Transportation Company was a railroad. The trolleys are not. The Yakima Valley Transportation Company is listed on the National Register of historic Places. The trolley is not. Its great the trolleys imported Portuguese trolleys. Its great they run occasionally for a few months a year. Its great folks from Renton and New York want us to use our taxpayer money for the trolleys. But from a Yakima perspective, we need to be realistic. The trolleys are an excursion, not transportation. Fund the trolleys from the Lodging Tax. Questions 1. Did the Quit Claim deed give ownership to Yakima of structures or fixtures attached to land owned by BNSF? 2. Is the Naches River Bridge eligible for state or federal transportation grants if the bridge is privately owned? What about if it is not used for transportation? The trolley is excursion, not transportation.
