A RESOLUTION authorizing an Interlocal agreement with Washington Traffic Safety
Commission for funding to provide traffic safety emphasis patrols.
WHEREAS, the City considers public safety to be an essential obligation and one of its
highest priorities; and
WHEREAS, traffic fatalities have risen since 2015, with 2023 having had the highest
rate since 1990 in Washington State; and
WHEREAS, The Yakima Police Department has seen a continued decrease in
percentage of impaired driver -involved fatal crashes from 2022 to 2024 due to emphasis
patrol and education efforts; and
WHEREAS, the High Visibility Enforcement program provides an opportunity to work
with state and local organizations to develop and implement statewide enforcement with the
goal of reducing traffic crashes; and
WHEREAS, the Washington Traffic Safety Commission will provide the funds not to
exceed $84,500.00 to assist in providing the funds necessary to conduct law enforcement
emphasis patrols; and
WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that it is in the best interest of the City to
promote enhanced traffic safety within the City by entering the attached and incorporated
Interlocal Agreement with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
The City Manager is hereby authorized to execute the attached and incorporated
Interlocal Agreement with the Washington Traffic Safety Commission to provide funds to
conduct traffic safety emphasis patrols within the City.
