Citizen Therapists Agai st Trumpism
As psychotherapists practicing in the United States, we are alarmed by the rise of the ideology of Trumpism, which we see as a threat to
the well-being of the people we care for and to American democracy itself We cannot remain silent as we witness the rise of an
American form of fascism We can leverage this time of crisis to deepen our commitment to American democracy
What is Trumpism?
Trumpism is an ideology, not an individual, and it may well endure and grow after the Presidential election even if Donald Trump is
defeated (Variants can be seen all over Europe ) Trumpism is a set of ideas about public life and a set of public practices characterized
by.
• Scapegoating and banishing groups of people who are seen as threats, including immigrants and religious minorities
• Degrading, ridiculing, and demeaning rivals and critics
• Fostering a cult of the Strong Man who
o Appeals to fear and anger
o Promises to solve our problems if we just trust in him
o Reinvents history and has little concern for truth
o Never apologizes or admits mistakes of consequence
o Sees no need for rational persuasion
o Subordinates women while claiming to idealize them
o Disdains public institutions like the courts when they are not subservient
o Champions national power over international law and respect for other nations
o Incites and excuses public violence by supporters
At the political level, Trumpism is an emerging form of American fascism, a point being made by social critics across the political
spectrum, including Robert Reich, Robert Kagan, and Andrew Sullivan As journalist Adam Gopnik points out, whether or not the term
"fascism" fully fits, it's clear that the American republic faces a clear and present danger when the candidate of a major political party
embraces an anti-democratic ideology At the cultural level, the Urban Dictionary has defined Trumpism as "the belief system that
encourages pretentious, narcissistic behavior as a way to achieve money, fame, and power"
What are the Effects of Trumpism?
1 Fear and alienation among scapegoated groups, beginning with Latino immigrants and Muslims, and then other groups who
become identified as threats
2. Exaggerated masculinity as a cultural ideal, with particular influence on young people and economically insecure men
3 Coarsening of public life by personal attacks on those who disagree
4 Erosion of the American democratic tradition which has emphasized the agency of we-the-people instead of the Strong Man
tradition of power
Where Did Trumpism Come From?
This question is bigger than Donald Trump The next public figure to capture the wave of Trumpism may be less clownish and have a
better set of movement-building skills, and thus be even more dangerous Following is a partial list of forces that underlie Trumpism
® Economic insecurity, particularly among working-class Americans
• The threat of terrorism since 9/11
• Fear of immigrants (related to economic insecurity and threats of terrorism)
• Distrust for government and politicians at a time of polarized gridlock
• Growing distrust for other institutions such as religion, the press, and the courts
• Rapid cultural change that has left many people confused and alienated
Why Therapists Must Speak Out
We must speak out for the well-being of people we treat and care for in our work. Trumpism will undermine the emotional health of
those seen as the "other" in America—both historically denigrated groups and those whose turn will come And it will compromise the
integrity of those who are seduced by the illusion that real Americans can only become winners if others become losers The public
rhetoric of Trumpism normalizes what therapists work against in our work. the tendency to blame others in our lives for our personal
fears and insecurities and then battle these others instead of taking the healthier but more difficult path of self-awareness and self-
responsibility It also normalizes a kind of hyper-masculinity that is antithetical to the examined life and healthy relationships that
psychotherapy helps people achieve Simply stated, Trumpism is inconsistent with emotionally healthy living—and we have to say so
publicly
We must speak out for the well-being of our democracy, which is both a way of living and acting together and a set of political
institutions Therapists have taken for granted how our work relies on a democratic tradition that gives people a sense of personal
agency to create new narratives and take personal and collective responsibility for themselves, their families, and their communities
Reliance on a Strong Man who will solve our problems and deal with internal and external enemies is a direct threat to the democratic
basis of psychotherapy Therapy only flourishes on democratic soil
Why speak collectively? Our responses thus far have been primarily personal—and too often confined to arm-chair diagnoses of Donald
Trump But a collective crisis faces our nation, a harkening back to the economic depression and demoralization of the 1930s (which fed
European fascism) and the upheaval over Jim Crow and Black civil rights in the 1950s Fortunately, the resolution of these crises led to
a deepening of American democracy, not the abandonment of it. Martin Luther King, influenced by his mentor Bayard Rustin and by
theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, didn't just critique unjust systems from the outside He called for strategic, collective work to take back an
American democracy that belongs to all the people As therapists, we have been entrusted by society with collective responsibility in the
' arena of mental, behavioral, and relational health When there is a public threat to our domain of responsibility we must speak out
together, not just to protest but to deepen our commitment to a just society and a democratic way of life This means being citizen
therapists who are concerned with community well-being as much as personal well-being, since the two are inextricably joined
Where We Stand as Citizen Therapists
We understand the draw of Trumpism and we acknowledge that some of our fellow citizens, and some of our clients, voted for Donald
Trump not because they embrace all aspects of Trumpism but because they are frustrated with their circumstances and fed up with the
current political system We are against Trumpism and its architects, not against those who are inclined to give it a chance to change
the direction of the country
But we reject the false equivalence of saying that because there is dishonesty and demagoguery on all political sides, why not support
someone from the outside? Trumpism is qualitatively different. To repeat: Trumpism undermines the core of American democracy by
promoting the idea of a single leader who will bring greatness to the nation by battling Those People Democracy requires personal and
collective agency so that we can work together across differences to solve problems and develop a shared way of life Psychotherapists
must be firmly on the side of democracy and work in solidarity with groups directly threatened by current and future versions of
Trumpism This work does not end with the election The wake-up call has been received Our first response is this manifesto More to
follow
Therefore, as citizen therapists we stand united against the dangerous ideology of Trumpism, and we encourage others to join
us in a deepened commitment to a democratic way of life that engages the talents, yearnings, and capacities of all the people

Meeting -7
Good evening Madam Mayor, Council and my community
If you will recall, I opened my comments to you at the last meeting
with a bible verse "'Love thy neighbor as yourself ' not 'Love thy legal
neighbor as yourself "' Someone in the audience responded quite
audibly "then we need to change the bible " While I have seen this
audacious behavior while canvassing and advocating in our
community and knew it was a sentiment among some, I was taken
aback by the open vitriol in this chamber
Madam Mayor, I sat with you in early December and voiced my serious
concerns and those of many in my community of the post-election
rhetoric and divisiveness that we all know has long been held by some
within our community I sat with Chief Rizzi, Sheriff Winter, Senator
King, Representatives McCabe and Johnson and Congressman
Newhouse with these same concerns I know many of the leaders
listened intently and were assuring, but I also remember a few laughs
and some incredulous dismissiveness of my concerns It was my hope
that united we would stand against hate, fear, intimidation and
bullying, but here we are subjected to hate, fear, bullying and
intimidation of community and our council members What I
witnessed was abhorrent and exactly why we need the resolution
By your vote against the "Welcoming City" resolution, your voice was
loud and clear to those most vulnerable in our community that when
bullying, hateful and intimidating behavior are displayed to council
especially by the "good ole boys' club", you will not in fact, support
the disenfranchised, vulnerable community members who most rely
on your representation and leadership I am extremely disappointed
As Dr Martin Luther King, Jr stated on April 27, 1965, in part "The
time is always right to do right "
Many of us "snowflakes" in this beautiful City will no longer keep
silent about the bullying, intimidation, hate and fear that is directed at
our disenfranchised and vulnerable community members or council
members who continue to advocate for an inclusive community I
support council members Dulce Gutierrez, Avina Gutierrez and Carmen
Mendez and the "Welcoming City" resolution

My name is Molly Storrs and I am the founder of the local progressive gro ,_ _ _. _
currently represents over 100 members of our community Our organization wanted to
express our support for the Welcoming and Sanctuary City The data is out and immigration
does not generate crime and sanctuary cities have been found to be safer than non-
sanctuary cities At the heart of Trump's threats to "build a great wall to stop illegal
immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to stop the drugs from pouring into our
cities" is a bigotry which its basis and foundation is only rampant racism This is a position that
we felt and hoped that Yakima did not also embody Act Yakima believes we are a melting
pot community
I would like to read some excerpts from recent news articles from PBS and NPR that
conducted studies related to immigration, crime and sanctuary cities
"Immigration-crime research over the past 20 years has widely corroborated the conclusions
of a number of early 20th-century presidential commissions that found no backing for the
immigration-crime connection Although there are always individual exceptions, the
literature demonstrates that immigrants commit fewer crimes, on average, than native-born
Americans
The most striking finding from our research is that for murder, robbery, burglary and larceny,
as immigration increased, crime decreased, on average, in American metropolitan areas
The only crime that immigration had no impact on was aggravated assault These
associations are strong and stable evidence that immigration does not cause crime to
increase in U S metropolitan areas, and may even help reduce it
There are a number of ideas among scholars that explain why more immigration leads to less
crime The most common explanation is that immigration reduces levels of crime by
revitalizing urban neighborhoods, creating vibrant communities and generating economic
growth " - PBS
"But the available data on crime, immigration, and safety in cities does not support the
premise for the president's actions News outlets and researchers pointed out during the
presidential campaign that immigrants who are in the country illegally are less likely to
commit crimes or be incarcerated than the general population The American Immigration
Council noted in a 2015 study that the recent period of rising immigration to the United
States from 1990 to 2013 also corresponded with plummeting crime rates across the country "
- NPR
I have provided copies of these articles for you to read along with my speech
With this in mind, and as you consider this issue I ask you, if you are not listening to data,
evidence and facts provided to form over 20 years of data, what are you actually basing
your decisions off of? We should not be praying on the most vulnerable in our community

In his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Trump named victims
who were reportedly killed by undocumented immigrants and said:
"They are being released by the tens of thousands into our communities with no
regard for the impact on public safety or resources We are going to build a great
border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to
stop the drugs from pouring into our communities. "
Now as president, he has signed executive orders that restrict entry of immigrants from
seven countries into the U.S. and authorize the construction of a wall along the U.S
border with Mexico. He also signed an order to prioritize the removal of"criminal aliens"
and withhold federal funding from "sanctuary cities."
But, what does research say about how immigration impacts crime in U.S.
communities? We turned to our experts for answers.
Across 200 metropolitan areas
Robert Adelman, University at Buffalo, and Lesley Reid, University of Alabama
Research has shown virtually no support for the enduring assumption that increases in
immigration are associated with increases in crime.
Immigration-crime research over the past 20 years has widely corroborated the
conclusions of a number of early 20th-century presidential commissions that found no
backing for the immigration-crime connection.Although there are always individual
exceptions, the literature demonstrates that immigrants commit fewer crimes, on
average, than native-born Americans.
Also, large cities with substantial immigrant populations have lower crime rates, on
average, than those with minimal immigrant populations.

Fact check- Immigration doesn't bring crime into U.S., data say I PBS NewsHour Page 3 of 4
In a paper published this year in the Journal of Ethnicity in Criminal Justice, we, along
with our colleagues Gail Markle, Saskia Weiss and Charles Jaret, investigated the
immigration-crime relationship.
We analyzed census data spanning four decades from 1970 to 2010 for 200 randomly
selected metropolitan areas, which include center cities and surrounding suburbs.
Examining data over time allowed us to assess whether the relationship between
immigration and crime changed with the broader U.S. economy and the origin and
number of immigrants.
The most striking finding from our research is that for murder, robbery, burglary and
larceny, as immigration increased, crime decreased, on average, in American
metropolitan areas. The only crime that immigration had no impact on was aggravated
assault These associations are strong and stable evidence that immigration does not
cause crime to increase in U.S. metropolitan areas, and may even help reduce it
There are a number of ideas among scholars that explain why more immigration leads
to less crime. The most common explanation is that immigration reduces levels of crime
by revitalizing urban neighborhoods, creating vibrant communities and generating
economic growth.
Across 20 years of data
Charis E. Kubrin, University of California, Irvine, and Graham Ousey, College of
William and Mary
For the last decade, we have been studying how immigration to an area impacts crime.
Across our studies, one finding remains clear: Cities and neighborhoods with greater
concentrations of immigrants have lower rates of crime and violence, all else being
equal.
Our research also points to the importance of city context for understanding the
immigration-crime relationship. In one study, for example, we found that cities with

Tact check. Immigration doesn't bring crime into U.S., data say 1 PBS NewsHour Page 4 of 4
historically high immigration levels are especially likely to enjoy reduced crime rates as
a result of their immigrant populations.
Findings from our most recent study, forthcoming in the inaugural issue of The Annual
Review of Criminology, only strengthen these conclusions.
We conducted a meta-analysis, meaning we systematically evaluated available research
on the immigration-crime relationship in neighborhoods, cities and metropolitan areas
across the U.S. We examined findings from more than 50 studies published between
1994 and 2014, including studies conducted by our copanelists, Adelman and Reid.
Our analysis of the literature reveals that immigration has a weak crime-suppressing
effect. In other words, more immigration equals less crime.
There were some individual studies that found that with an increase in immigration,
there was an increase in crime. However, there were 2.5 times as many findings that
showed immigration was actually correlated with less crime. And, the most common
finding was that immigration had no impact on crime.
The upshot? We find no evidence to indicate that immigration leads to more crime and it
may, in fact, suppress it.

mayors have said they won't cooperate with his plans to enlist their police forces to
help the federal government round up undocumented immigrants.
The president said that he will cut federal funding to the police budgets of so-called
sanctuary cities — like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.0 — which could cost
them billions of dollars. (Ahilan Arulanantham, a human rights attorney, told us on
the Code Switch podcast this week that some big legal fights between those cities and
the White House over whether the federal government has the authority to withhold
that law enforcement funding are likely.)
But if threatening to cut off federal funding won't make sanctuary cities fall in line, the
president is ready to try shaming them. According to one of the executive orders he
signed on immigration enforcement this week, the White House intends to publicize
when sanctuary cities do not comply by"[making] public a comprehensive list of
criminal actions committed by aliens and any jurisdiction that ignored or otherwise
failed to honor any detainers with respect to such aliens."
It's not clear yet exactly how the White House will publicize this catalog of crimes
committed by immigrants.
But the available data on crime, immigration, and safety in cities does not support the
premise for the president's actions. News outlets and researchers pointed out during
the presidential campaign that immigrants who are in the country illegally are less
likely to commit crimes or be incarcerated than the general population. The American
Immigration Council noted in a 2015 study that the recent period of rising
immigration to the United States from 1990 to 2013 also corresponded with
plummeting crime rates across the country.
This past Thursday, a new study conducted Tom K. Wong, a political scientist at the
University of California-San Diego, found that there are broad benefits for local
jurisdictions that resist cooperating with federal immigration enforcement — they are
safer in the aggregate and enjoy stronger economies. "For the first time we're kind of

seeing that crime rates are lower when localities stay out of the business of federal
immigration enforcement," Wong said.
He looked at federal data on immigration detainers, an ICE-initiated 48-hour hold on
anyone identified as being in the country illegally. When someone is arrested and
detained in a local jail, their fingerprints are cross-referenced with a federal database
of undocumented immigrants. If the fingerprints match those of someone known to
be in the country illegally, ICE can ask local law enforcement to hold that person as
federal officials decide whether to start the deportation process. (There have been
court battles over whether holding people for days without actual charges with these
federal immigration detainer requests is in violation of the Constitution.)
Wong compared the the data from thousands of counties, those that ICE said did not
honor detainer requests and those that did. "We don't have to make up a definition of
what a sanctuary locality is," Wong said. "We have ICE telling us what it thinks a
sanctuary county is."
On average, counties that did not comply with ICE requests experienced 35.5 fewer
crimes per 10,000 people than those that did. Wong also found that counties that did
not comply with detainer requests had higher household incomes, lower rates of
unemployment, lower rates of poverty, and were less likely to have children under 18
in households receiving public benefits.
The crime numbers did not surprise Wong. Research has shown that working with
federal immigration enforcement made it harder for local police agencies to
investigate crimes because witnesses and victims who were in the country illegally
would be less likely to come forward if they thought they risked being detained and
deported. It could be that sanctuary counties have immigrant populations who are
more integrated into their social fabric and economies, he said.
The research also revealed that smaller, more rural counties experienced the most
significant impact from sanctuary policies on their crime rates (lower) and economies
(stronger). Taken together, Wong said, the net benefits to sanctuary cities would offset

Good Evening and thank you! I think it is shameful that some
opponents of the 'Welcoming City' concept have seen fit to threaten
the city Council people who are in favor of the idea. This is wrong and
uncivilized.
Here is why I favor a Welcoming City:
I favor it for reasons of public safety, if an undocumented person has
any fear of calling 911 and getting an ambulance, the fire department
or the police where they are needed, this not only endangers the
undocumented person, it endangers ALL of us.
Unattended medical situations can lead to death, as can fires not being
called in.
If people can't call the police about a crime, they may call other less
desirable people to settle their problems. We can't have this.
We have gotten a measure of control over the gang situation in our
city largely because people are not afraid to call the police.
We've had some progress in the form of better community policing and

I am writing in regards to your resolution designating Yakima a "Welcoming City "
Your resolution is contradictory to the rule of law, legally flawed, and
unconstitutional With due respect, I strongly urge this Council to reflect on your
duties as representatives of this community, your obligation to the law, and the
wellbeing of this community
There is a basic expectation that our elected officials would respect and obey the
rule of law, as established by our federal and state systems Need I remind you
that most laws are passed by vote of the People, or our representatives in
Washington D C , whom we have sent to D C by way of our vote? By this
Resolution, you as City Council, are declaring that you do not believe in the rule.
of law and the vote of people Your action states rather, that one can pick and
choose which laws should be upheld and which should be disobeyed without
punishment for certain special interest groups This is, at its core,
unconstitutional, and is reminiscent of the tyranny that this great Nation was
founded to oppose At the heart of our government is a social pact --the Civil
Society -- whereby a free people have agreed to live= by a set of limited laws that
are applied equally and fairly This Resolution is a violation of this basic founding
principle and a declaration of the Yakima City Council that the rule of law is
meaningless Now, I would assume that our elected officials have some
background is the Constitution and= our Founding, but your actions suggest
otherwise Perhaps we should entertain a modification to our City Charter that
mandates any electee hold a minimum degree of education regarding
Constitutional law
Your proposal rewards the lawless Your recent article, which I have shared all
over social media, indicates that there are good people in our community who
are afraid to call the police because of their immigration status Let us not forget,
that these people have violated our law by coming here illegally They are on the
same level as someone who has committed theft or sold drugs -- they broke the
law There are decent people in every walk of life that have, in some way, broken
the law Do we give all of them a free pass so that they can call the police too?
Should we excuse misdemeanor warrants so those with outstanding warrants
won't be afraid to report their Christmas decorations stolen? Where do we draw
the line with your type of thinking?
In the Resolution it is stated that "the City of Yakima believes in the equality
and constitutional and civil rights of all people " This statement is
legally incorrect. You see, Constitutional rights cannot be bestowed on non-
citizens Constitutional rights are reserved for American Citizens, because
American Citizens have fought, bled, and died to establish and protect these
sacred rights for generations For those immigrants who have come here legally,
they have earned these rights by the sacrifices they made to follow the rule of
law and earn citizenship The simple truth is that if you have come here illegally,
you do not have rights Nope None
Your Resolution states that the purpose is to make our community safe How do
you intend to secure our safety when you make a public declaration that the rule
of law means nothing? As with other Sanctuary Cities (let's call this what it is),
such a Resolution will attract those that mean to do harm, knowing that they can
hide here and escape scrutiny This will not only increase crime and danger
posed by gangs, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, but allow a safe haven
for terrorists from others countries, who use a lack of security at our borders to
gain entry into this Nation Not only do you demonstrate a disrespect for the
safety of this community, you show utter disregard for the economic wellbeing of
Yakima I have lived here for 36 years I've witnessed Yakima's continued
economic failure for years We struggle in this community to establish and
maintain local business The Trump Administration has stated that they will cut
off Federal assistance from any community that seeks sanctuary status What do
you propose to do without this funding? Without funding for farm workers? Mental
illness? Highways? Grants for small business? To make a few lawbreakers fee I
safe, you would strangle us all financially?
I have also recently seen that the City Council is considering the construction of a
"multicultural" Hispanic center (isn't that an oxymoron)? May I ask why this takes
precedent over the maintenance of our streets and the homeless in our
community? Why will you spend money on this but cancel the 4th of July Parade
years in a row now? Our Veteran's Day Parade and Memorial Day Parade have
dwindled in participation and attendance to the point it sickens me It saddens my
heart every time I stand on near -empty sidewalks and watch our veterans walk
down those streets, returning only a handful of waves Will City Council do
something to boost these events? Will you celebrate American culture and the
patriotic sacrifices of the people in our own community? Will you establish
systems in which new immigrants are taught the value of these things? Why
haven't you? Your lack of action is shameful Absolutely shameful
I am convinced that, at this point, the entire Council should be dismissed by the
People next November Better yet, recalled prior to the end of your terms

I'm a biology student at Yakima Valley College and I'm also a veteran of the United
States Air Force In response to the recent statements and executive orders that have
been issued by our new president and his cabinet, I've become terrified I'm aware that
Yakima is currently a "welcoming city" and that fact greatly eases my mind I implore
you, and the rest of Yakima leadership, to continue to stand against bigoted policy and
help those in Yakima who don't have the voice to help themselves Our country is in
desperate need of more sanctuary cities that are united against xenophobia and
intolerance I consider Yakima to be an example of the melting pot that this country was
always meant to be, from our brothers and sisters of the local tribe to the migrant farm
workers who help to make our beautiful agricultural way of life possible, we have a
diversity here that must be cherished and protected
The new presidential administration is also speaking out against health care and
reproductive care I hope that our city stands with Planned Parenthood and the
Affordable Care Act. The city of Yakima, with higher rates of poverty and
unemployment than much of the state, cannot afford to have our access to
healthcare limited I do not know a single person who hasn't benefited from the
care that our local Planned Parenthood provides Please, do not allow fear and
bullying to push our city's #1 provider of reproductive healthcare away
I've lived in Yakima for most of my life I've traveled across the country and to
several others and this valley is the most beautiful place I've ever been I urge
you, don't let ugly thinking diminish the beauty of our home
So please, stand up and speak out against racism, Islamophobia, and bigotry at
every chance

Get with it. Do the right thing Make Yakima a Sanctuary City
Bridget Russel — bridget.russel(cgmail.com
I'm writing to you to share my deep disappointment in last week's "Welcoming
City" vote I have no doubt you're hearing differently from many people in our
community, and that's very unfortunate As the leaders of our city, you know very
well that Yakima's economy has been built on immigrant labor Yet your vote has
just alienated more than half of our population —the majority of that population
here legally, and contributing positively to our community It saddens me to no
end that we have half of our city feeling that the other half doesn't believe they
belong here
Additionally, the optics of the vote were horrendous I know it was strictly
symbolic, however it has labelled us an "Unwelcoming City" not only to people
who live in our community — but to anyone who should visit Yakima Including
•
those here to add to our economy through tourism
This vote was obviously made to appease the loud voices, many of who — let's
be honest— are hiding behind "legality" as thinly veiled racism This could have
been a great time to set the record straight with our entire community that we
celebrate the diversity of our city, and recognize that much of the immigration to
the Yakima Valley is because of our agriculture-based economy The
opportunity, yet again, was missed It's so disappointing
I'll end my rant with this radio interview with the mayor of Syracuse, Stephanie
Miner
http.//wamc.org/post/despite-trump-order-mayor-says-svracuse-will-remain-
sanctuary-city
As she states, it's actually illegal for the federal government to mandate a locality
to use its local police forces to enforce immigration I know we are already a "de-
facto" sanctuary city I sincerely hope that you, our leaders, can find common
ground on this issue and make it clear that our local police do not and WILL NOT
in the future be enforcing federal immigration laws
What do we stand for? Are we welcoming in our diversity, or are we not? Our
community— as a WHOLE — should come first and be lifted up Instead, we are
now more divided than ever

need to take care of your citizens here We should not be doing this, this is
breaking the laws that already set up You are not in agreement with our
president. You are taking money away from our city (Reconsider) You are
crediting a can of worms for our city, you do not know who you are giving refuge
to You will be accountable for not taking care of our citizens first. You put us and
our families at risk, with standing with illegals, whom have not come here
