SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
The Police Department currently has a used police vehicle in the Equipment Rental and
Replacement Division, which is in excess of the City's needs. This car scheduled for auction next
year. The Yakima County Juvenile Court is requesting that we donate this surplus vehicle to them
for use by the juvenile probation officer that currently works out of the Yakima Police Department.
The vehicle is a 1995 Crown Victoria, equipment #1252.
In a joint operation with the Yakima County Juvenile Court, a Juvenile Probation Officer has been
assigned to the Yakima Police Department for three years. This mutually beneficial partnership
has resulted in an overall increase in shared information between our agencies and increased
communication between line officers and probation officers.
Throughout this partnership, the assigned probation officer has not had access to County vehicles
due to shortages in their motor -pool and County employees are not authorized to use City vehicles
for liability reasons. This vehicle will be used by the probation officer to conduct official duties.
Staff is requesting the City Council declare this unit as surplus to our needs and authorize the
donation of this vehicle to Yakima County, specifically for the use by the probation officer stationed
at the Yakima Police Department. The County understands and agrees that the vehicle is being
donated for use by the Yakima County Juvenile Probation Department.
