SUMMARY EXPLANATION: Last year the City with CDBG funds assisted in converting an unused
fire station to a classroom site to be used to train potential firefighters. The program is a partnership
between the City Fire Department and the Yakima Valley Technical Center, and YVCC.
The program has been tremendously successful, and the schools have offered us the opportunity to
expand the program. In order to expand there is a need for 25 additional turnouts (firefighter protective
gear). This will cost a total of up to $41,000.
This is also an excellent use of CDBG Economic Development funds. The program provides an
excellent opportunity to local young people, and also allows us to screen the best students as potential
City of Yakima firefighters.
This proposal was discussed at a meeting of the City Council's Neighborhood Development
Subcommittee on March 16, 2001 and is being forwarded to Council with a recommendation to approve
this grant proposal.
