R-2000- 56 A RESOLUTION authorizing, approving and ratifying the "2000 Operating/Program Plan" of the City of Yakima Wellness Committee. WHEREAS, as part of the City of Yakima's self-insured health care program, the City of Yakima established a Wellness Committee to provide opportunities for employees to improve their physical, mental and emotional well-being, and to provide an avenue for medical costs containment; and WHEREAS, attached hereto is a "2000 Operating/Program Plan" for the Wellness Committee that is intended to provide said opportunities and provide an avenue for medical costs containment; and WHEREAS, the City Council has determined that it is in the best interest of the City to authorize and ratify the attached "2000 Operating/Program Plan" of the Wellness Committee, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: The attached and incorporated "2000 Operating/Program Plan" of the City of Yakima Wellness Committee is hereby authorized, approved and ratified. FEBRUARY • Hold City-wide ping-pong tournament. MARCH • Host the biennial "Wellness Fair" expanded to a two-day event: the first day at the Public Works Fitness Center and the second at the City Hall Fitness Center. • Host Family Bowling party. APRIL • Hold City-wide Fitness Challenge • Begin At -Work Weight Watchers Program for 2000. • Sponsor Wellness Committee participation in the AWC Wellness Conference. • Offer health screenings. MAY • Sponsor Golf at Fisher Golf Course. • Hold re -fresher courses on how to properly use equipment in Fitness Centers. • Finish and evaluate Fitness Challenge. • Organize a team for the American Cancer Society's "Walk of Life." • Host Family Skate party. JUNE • Kick off a "Smoke Free Summer" promotion with smoking cessation classes, coupled with information about insurance benefits covering cessation. • Work with the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to bring additional information and Healthwise handbooks to City employees. • Organize 1/2 court Basketball. JULY • Offer second, 10 -week Weight Watcher At Work Program. • Sponsor Night Golf. AUGUST • Organize "Dog Days of Summer" swim-a-thon, providing a free -swim month for employees. • Hold annual employee picnic. C2 City of Yakima Wellness Committee 2000 Operating Pian Page 2 SEPTEMBER • Sponsor Golf at Fisher Golf Course. = Promote Fall walking trail: "Leaves of Change." • Kick off Fall Fitness Challenge. • Offer third, 10 -week Weight Watcher At Work Program. OCTOBER • Partner with the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer awareness. • Work with insurance Board to offer flu shots to employees and their families free of charge. • Sponsor participation in the Evergreen Everwell conference. • Develop 2001 budget and program plan. NOVEMBER • Work with Insurance Board to offer flu shots to employees and their families free of charge. • Hold healthy holidays cooking classes. • Organize money management classes through the Employee Assistance Program. • Offer Holiday Stress Management seminars. DECEMBER • Sponsor Winter Fitness Challenge. • Organize winter aerobics classes before and after work at City Hall Fitness Center. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR • Provide on-going support for the Employee Fitness Centers. • Maintain Wellness Resource Office. • Publish Wellness Newsletter, highlighting upcoming events and important health issues. • Continue sponsorship of City Volleyball team. • Continue sponsorship of City Golf team. • Continue offering reimbursement in designated Parks & Recreation classes. The mission of the Wellness Program is to provide City employees the opportunity to improve their physical, mental and emotional well-being and to provide an avenue for medical cost containment by promoting healthy lifestyle choices. The Wellness Program Operating/Program Plan for calendar year 2000is-included.in_-the-report-packet. Also included, you will find the annual reports for the past three years (1997,1998, and 1999), which details the activity level of City Employee -in -411e various Wellness Programs. In fact, the City's Wellness Committee and Programs have been recognized by the State of Washington with --the -Golde-nn-Apple Award at the 1999 Evergreen Everwell { nnf-erence (see attached announcement). Again, in April ithis year the City of Yakima, was awarded the 2000 AWC WellCity; Award. This -will be presented to the elected Official _at the AWC annual conference (see attached announcement).
