MEMORANDUM
To: Denise Nichols, Parks & Recreation Manager
From: Randy Murphy, Park Maintenance Supervisor/City Arborist
Re: Raised Sidewalks on N. 2ND Street
Date: February 3, 2000
I met with Mr. Joe Mann today concerning the raised sidewalks on 2ND Street. At 20 N.
2ND Street continuing North to A street are four Sweetgum. The Sweetgum have
outgrown their planting sites, damaged during the snowstorm of three years ago,
improperly pruned and have buckled the sidewalk. Mr. Mann has requested the trees be
removed. The business owners will pay for replacement trees, with our recommendation
of acceptable species.
The four Sweetgum do not meet our level of criteria for which I can authorize removal.
My recommendation is assistance with contacting the Street Division to have the
sidewalks repaired.

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
Staff respectfully requests Council approval of the attached Resolution requesting
removal of four Liquidambar Sweetgum trees located at 20, 22 and 26 North 2nd
Street. Currently the trees in question do not meet the criteria of dead, dying and/or
diseased; however, the owner of the property has requested tree removal because of
how the existing trees are uprooting the sidewalk.
Staff will replace these trees with prunusx cistena "Schmidteis" Big Cis Plum.
Maintenance staff will remove and replant these trees. The business owner will pay
for the cost of new trees. The adjacent property owner will contact the Street
Department for sidewalk repairs.
