We appreciate your interest in the matter. In response, the City has been, and will continue to be very active in working with the provider community to ensure that there are options for the unsheltered population in Yakima. City staff provided regular in-person information updates regarding available winter services and shelter options to individuals in the encampment and also arranged for representatives from the several shelter provider agencies to come to the encampment and explain their services and options. In addition, we have worked closely with the Yakima Valley Conference ol'Governments (YVCOG) to request that additional funding be made available to the provider community for shelter options this winter if the need arises. We understand that at the recent YVCOG Homele! Planning and Policy Committee, funds were earmarked for this purpose. YVCOG has also indicated that they will be initiating a Request for Proposal process in January 2017 to fund projects across the Continuum of Care for the homeless population in the area. This method, in place in many communities in Washington, appropriately provides for a more comprehensive and sustainable approach to service provision, We do appreciate the concern expressed by the ACLU for the needs of the homeless populati lor in Yakima. We share those concerns and we have made efforts to address the matter in ways th are appropriate, collaborative and supportive of the homeless population.
