R-99- 132 A RESOLUTION authorizing the removal of two (2) white birch trees located in the City right-of-way along 4403 Summitview Avenue, Yakima, Washington. WHEREAS, the roots from the middle birch tree located in the City right-of-way along 4403 Summitview Avenue, Yakima, Washington, are exposed in the adjacent sidewalk, and the roots of the neighboring birch tree to the west of the middle birch tree are lifting the sidewalk; and WHEREAS, an arborist in the Parks and Recreation Division has examined the trees to determine if roots could be removed in an effort to save the trees, and he believes that it would weaken the trees significantly to remove the roots; and WHEREAS, the City Council deems it to be in the best interest of the City to remove, at City expense, the middle and most westerly white birch trees located in the City right-of-way along 4403 Summitview Avenue, Yakima, Washington; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: The Director of Public Works for the City of Yakima is hereby authorized and directed to remove the middle and most westerly white birch trees located in the City right-of-way along 4403 Summitview Avenue, Yakima, Washington. Chris Waarvick, Director of Public Works Denise Nichols, Parks and Recreation Manager Shelley Willson, Street and Traffic Operations Manager CONTACT PERSON/TELEPHONE: Shelley Willson/576-6430 SUMMARY EXPLANATION: Staff respectfully requests Council approval of attached Resolution to remove two neighboring white birch trees located in the City right-of-way at 4403 Summitview, Yakima, Washington. Currently the trees do not meet the criteria of dead, dying or diseased, but the roots of one of the trees are exposed on the sidewalk, and the roots of the neighboring tree to the west are lifting the sidewalk. The City arborist examined the trees to determine if roots could be removed in an effort to save the trees. He believes that it would weaken the trees significantly to remove the roots. The Street Division will contract out the removal of the trees and replacement of the sidewalk sections. Payment for the services may be made either from the Street Operations Fund or the Risk Management Fund.
