R-99- 70 A RESOLUTION authorizing and directing the City of Yakima Transit Division to provide free transit service between June 21-26,1999, and free transit service on each Wednesday and Saturday through August 28, 1999, in order to inform the public of and to promote transit route modifications. WHEREAS, the City of Yakima Transit Division provides public transportation services to the citizens and visitors of Yakima; WHEREAS, said public transportation helps to alleviate traffic congestion, parking congestion, and increased air pollution in the area; and WHEREAS, the Transit Division recently modified a number of transit routes and desires to inform the public of and to promote these route modifications through free transit service between June 21-26,1999, and free transit service on each Wednesday and Saturday through August 28, 1999; and WHEREAS, the City Council deems that it is in the best interest of the City of Yakima to inform the public of and to promote transit route modifications through free transit service between June 21-26,1999, and free transit service on each Wednesday and Saturday through August 28, 1999, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: The City of Yakima Transit Division is hereby authorized and directed to provide free transit service between June 21-26, 1999, and free transit service on each Wednesday and Saturday through August 28, 1999, in order to inform the public of and to promote transit route modifications. SUBMITTED BY: Chris Waarvick, Director of Public Works CONTACT PERSON/TELEPHONE: Bill Schultz, Transit Manager/575-6005 SUMMARY EXPLANATION: During the Transit Division Workforce Committee presentation relative to anticipated route modifications, it was recommended and approved by Council to establish a kickoff week of free service to encourage people to try the modified services. It was further recommended and approved that, following the kickoff week, free service be continued on Wednesdays and Saturdays through August in order to encourage summer ridership, which is generally a low ridership season. The attached resolution is the legislation required to implement the Council's approval.
