For Meeting of: June 3, 2025 ITEM TITLE: Resolution naming features within the Aquatic Center at MLK Jr. Park (No Budgetary Impact) SUBMITTED BY: Scott Schafer, Public Works Director * Ken Wilkinson, Parks & Recreation Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: Fund raising efforts for the Aquatic Center at MLK Jr. Park raised over$3 Million dollars to assist with the construction of the facility. As part of the fund raising efforts, organization, companies and individuals were offered the ability to name features within the facility in honor of their donation. According to City policy, naming of parks and features within a park require approval of the City Council. The Yakima Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved for City Council consideration the recognition of the donors for their generosity and approved the naming of the following features at their May 14, 2025 meeting: 1. Food truck and picnic area: Comprehensive Healthcare Picnic Area 2. Slide tower: OIC of Washington Waterslide 3. Entry lobby: Harvest Auto Lobby 4. Entrance outdoor patio: Yakima Rotary Club Patio 5. Community Room: Ester Huey Community Room 6. Ninja course: Senator Curtis King Ninja Course 7. Climbing wall: Jordan and Amy Matson Climbing Wall 8. Basketball hoop: Quinn and Aaron Dalan Basketball Hoop 9. Vortex, Yakima Valley Community Foundation Vortex ITEM BUDGETED: N/A STRATEGIC PRIORITY 24-25: A Thriving Yakima RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Resolution. R-2025- A RESOLUTION naming features within the City of Yakima Aquatic Center at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, in recognition of donors who provided financial support for the construction and development of the Aquatic Center. WHEREAS, in April of 2024, the City Council approved the development and construction of the Aquatic Center; and WHEREAS, as part of the fundraising efforts for the Aquatic Center project, donors were offered name recognition within the Aquatic Center's interior features as a condition of the donation, for a period of ten years; and WHEREAS, these individuals or organizations donated financially to the development of the Aquatic Center: Comprehensive Healthcare, Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), Harvest Auto, Yakima Rotary Clubs, Yakima Neighborhood Health in honor of Ester Huey, Senator Curtis King, Jordan and Amy Matson, Quinn and Aaron Dalan and the Yakima Valley Community Foundation, and WHEREAS, the naming of specific features within the Aquatic Center would highlight the donors' contributions, and it is recommended the features be named: 1. Food truck and picnic area: Comprehensive Healthcare Picnic Area, 2. Waterslide tower: OIC Waterslide, 3. Entry lobby: Harvest Auto Lobby, 4. Entrance outdoor patio: Yakima Rotary Club Patio, 5. Community Room: Ester Huey Community Room; 6. Ninja course: Senator Curtis King Ninja Course, 7. Climbing Wall: Jordan and Amy Matson Climbing Wall, and 8. Basketball hoop: Quinn and Aaron Dalan Basketball Hoop; 9. Vortex, Yakima Valley Community Foundation Vortex, and WHEREAS, the specific naming of these components meets criteria specified in Resolution R-2022-088, a resolution establishing and amending the policies and procedures relating to the naming of public parks and recreation-related facilities and interior features; and WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously recommends approval of the naming of these components within the Aquatic Center; and WHEREAS, the City Council of Yakima also desires to advance community development, enhancement of the City's quality of life and provision of healthy recreational opportunities for enjoyment of its citizens; now, therefore, and BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: The Aquatic Center's interior components shall be named as follows, in recognition of the donors who provided financial support for the construction and development of the Aquatic Center, for a period of ten years from the date of the opening of the facility: 1. Food truck and picnic area: Comprehensive Healthcare Picnic Area 2. Slide tower: OIC of Washington Waterslide 3. Entry lobby: Harvest Auto Lobby 4. Entrance outdoor patio: Yakima Rotary Club Patio 5. Community Room: Ester Huey Community Room 6. Ninja course: Senator Curtis King Ninja Course 86 7. Climbing wall: Jordan and Amy Matson Climbing Wall 8.
