YPAL A member of National Police Activities League
DRAFT
Yakima Police Activities League (YPAL) has planned additional programs that will
increase the utilization of the Yakima Fruit Community Center The goal of YPAL is to
develop programs that evolve as the needs of the community youth change Working
toward that goal will involve the current and future stakeholders working together to
assess community needs and developing programs and activities consistent with those
needs The activities and outcomes will be evaluated and results reported to the
community
There is a core of activities currently offered that routinely involve large numbers of
children and their parents The focus in the future will be to add activities or programs to
that core This will create an environment of increased awareness and access to
effective positive youth, family and community development programs Measurements
of success will be applied to all current and future programs and activities and will not
only report the success of numbers of kids and their families participating but will
additionally assess the outcomes that will be of benefit to the entire community
The following stakeholders are committed to support YPAL in its effort to contribute to
positive youth development, family protected values and help /wellness programs
• YPAL Volunteers
In addition to our regularly scheduled weekly activities, volunteers deliver tutoring
services, classes on healthy living (Kids in the Kitchen) and mentoring from assigned
coaches Special events, supported by our partner People for People, who provide
transportation, are also planned, such as visits to Boulder Cave, twice a year visits to
the Seattle Zoo with both children and parents, Halloween visits to the corn maze and a
Halloween party at YPAL. Other trips /excursions are offered, based on contributions
from philanthropic and parent groups
• Washington State University Extension programs (Please see single page report
filed on behalf of YPAL and Washington State University Extension)
There are a series of programs planned for November to coordinate "healthy living,
nutrition education" with the kids in the kitchen program Our first guest chef is the
owner of Second Street Grill, who will be working together with the representative from
Washington University Extension

• Yakima Valley Farm Workers
YPAL will be able to draw from the many resources of the Farm Workers Clinic
including on site alcohol /drug abuse professional counseling, physicians leading
discussions with parents and children regarding positive health practices, financial
support for innovative programming and community support, as well as staff assisting
with referrals of at risk youth
• Yakima Valley Schools
The schools were previously very involved, providing tutors and mentors and some
programming We have classrooms as well as large meeting rooms to accommodate
educational events led by the school system personnel as they are able to volunteer
• Yakima Police Department (YPD)
Previously YPD was very involved with officers assigned to the YPAL center but the
emphasis on suppression called for "all hands on deck " Currently, the new recruits are
trained at the YPAL center, usually in the mornings and sometimes on the weekends It
would go a long way in the community to have a resource officer present during times of
heavy activity
• Volunteers and community members
We have many volunteers that are willing to contribute but once we are at full staff,
those volunteers need to be trained and organized to reach maximum benefit to the
community, the families and children
• Heritage University
Personnel from Heritage University (HU) plan to come to YPAL about every two months
to offer sessions on looking at what they can do after graduating from high school, such
as college or a trade school Discussions are ongoing about having representatives
from JM Perry Institute and Yakima Valley Community College participate as well

Additional activities include a student panel /mentors to talk to YPAL kids about how they
made it to and through college while other representatives talk to the YPAL parents
about not only how to help their student get into college, but also, getting their own GED
through the HU High School Equivalency Program (HEP) HU will bring representatives
from CAMP (College Assistance of Migrants Program) and financial aid information that
will educate both the student and parent about grants, scholarships and loans that will
help pay for their college education
There is also an opportunity to have various student clubs come to "plant a seed" for the
younger kids (the HU ENACTUS, a business club, has a program called "moon jars"
that would be great for the grade school kids), and a program called "Thought Patterns
for Success" (the Seahawks used this the year they won the Super Bowl) will be offered
to the junior and senior aged students This includes a set of modules that would be
presented weekly to a group of up to 20 students that helps them realign their thoughts
to positive rather than negative and helps them move their actions and beliefs to the
positive side Activities are being planned for all ages of students
