According to AI, Hedge funds and other Corporate groups now own approximately 40% of the U.S. multifamily housing stock. This makes the U.S. the world's largest market for institutional ownership of multifamily housing. (In contrast, countries like Germany (13%), Spain (6/,), Franca ( %),, Japan (3%6), and the UK (3%) have significantly lower percentages of institutional ownership.) Robert F. Kennedy Jr., current Health Secretary and one of the few voices brave enough to call this out publicly, has just sounded the alarm: "BlackRock, State Street, and Vanguard are buying up homes across America. This isn't random. It's systematic." (Please read the attached article.) In all fairness, other individual small investors, those owning 1-10 rental properties, own most (70 %) of the single family rentals. But both of these groups are increasing their holdings...daily. Washington now has the sixth -highest rents in the nation, putting our median rent in the state at a whopping $1,731. U.S. Census Bureau data. Nov 12, 2024 Why should this concern us? In your reading from last week, the very last included line stated that For at least 5O% of all Americans, their home is their primary source of personal wealth...their nest egg. If you remove this ability to buy property from an average citizen, you are essentially dooming them to long term poverty. But most investors don't care. For them it's all about THEIR bottom line. They simply don't consider the fact that when they use their vast capital reserves to buy a property for rent, someone else doesn't get to buy it to live in and build THEIR personal wealth. But does this loss for the average citizen stop with Investors? Remember, we talked about a third entity in this `Housing room': A VERY territorial, mostly invisible, Super -Giant and MEAN Gorilla. And a Gorilla that most likely controls the Giant Whale and that first Giant Elephant in the room. To understand the Gorilla, let's start here: In the early1800's a German Idealist named Hegel (Hay -Gull) introduced Hegelian Dialectic: A way of coming to, or forcing, a different conclusion from the `norm' on/into a group of people. Here's how Hegelian Dialectic works: You have something (idea, invention, revolution, etc.) you want to introduce/sell to people but you know they won't like it and will resist it. But you think you know better... • You create a problem or a `crisis' so that the thing/idea you want to introduce will be the answer to the crisis. • When the time is right you introduce what YOU want as an answer to their `crisis'. • People accept what you are selling as the answer to avoid their `crisis'... whether or NOT it's to their real and long term benefit. Distributed at Meeting: Item# f Yakima City Council Speech on LGBTQ+ Pride Proclamation and Protection Time: 2.5 minutes Good afternoon, Members of the Yakima City Council, My name is Christina Nyirati. I'm a nurse leader, a long-time resident of Yakima, and a lesbian woman who has been in a loving partnership for nearly four decades. Together, my partner, Dr. Roseann Umana and I have raised a beautiful, emotionally healthy daughter, and we have been proud to contribute to this community we call home. Today, I'm here to ask you —respectfully and sincerely —to reconsider your decision from one year ago, May 21 2024 to reject the Pride Month proclamation and to ensure protection for participants in the 2024 Pride Parade. Now, in 2025, Yakima has a profound opportunity —not just to recognize LGBTQ+ people —but to celebrate the diversity, resilience, and contributions we bring to this wonderful valley. Pride is not about division. It's about visibility, acceptance, and safety. It is about affirming that LGBTQ+ people are part of this community and deserve to live without fear. I honor the faith traditions many of you hold. As a fellow person of faith, I remember that Jesus taught us to love and welcome all people. Pride is an invitation to live that out —to create a space where every person, including our LGBTQ+ youth, can feel seen, safe, and supported. I understand that some may have concerns —about religion, about morality, about public expression. But let's be clear: asking for protection and recognition is not asking for endorsement. It is asking for the same civil rights afforded to every group in Yakima. The right to gather. The right to speak. The right to exist without fear. The Constitution guarantees our right to peaceful assembly. By protecting the Pride Parade, Yakima is not choosing sides —it is upholding the law and affirming the dignity of all its citizens. To deny this protection sends a dangerous message —not just of exclusion, but of indifference in the face of rising violence against LGBTQ+ people across the country. I ask you to lead with courage and compassion. Show our youth that Yakima is a place where everyone —regardless of identity —can belong. Please reconsider your decision. Issue the proclamation for Pride Month. Ensure safety for those attending the Pride Parade. This is not just your civic responsibility it is a reflection of your moral and human one. Thank you.
